Excellent article! Young people have been taught that STEM is the be-all, end-all for humans to succeed in life. Even when I was in school, people looked down on people pursuing "the trades." We need a LOT more people like Mike Rowe to talk some sense into them.

I think many people grew up having a completely deformed and pessimistic view of the construction trades. Young people can be inspired to take pride and find meaning in literally building America.

Great article! My biggest concern with federal infrastructure legislation, like the IIJA, is not that it improves infrastructure. Rather, that it is an egregious overstep by the federal government. Nearly all infrastructure spending needs to be done at the state level.

I appreciate your feedback. Maintaining, improving and building infrastructure is essential, and perhaps my suspicions about the current administration make me question the effectiveness of IIJA. Indeed, I believe that nearly all infrastructure spending needs to be performed at the state level.

Moreover, I recognize that the construction trades need to be revamped and made to appeal to young people because the industry needs youthful enthusiasm to carry the professionalism and wisdom of older generations.

I’ve never even considered this before, but it certainly is concerning, now that you’ve laid it out. Tying the infrastructure into the act of building America is true and makes sense, but it’s also brilliant. Makes you ‘feel’ the impact in the gut and hopefully can be used to inspire young people to pursue these trades. Also, the statistics and information was great. I’m sure it took a LONG time to pull all that together but we got to benefit from your work with a crash course on everything from how dollars are spent to some of the congressional oversight. Thank you for providing such excellent and insightful content!
