My wife is from Italy; she moved to the United States 4 years ago. When I visited her family in Rome, we went to an open market that had existed for many generations. Farmers bring fresh fruit and vegetables, butchers bring farm-raised meat, and fishermen bring fresh fish (sometimes still alive in water). Italy does not allow GMO-raised fruit and vegetables, pesticides are almost nonexistent in the produce, the meat is free from hormones and antibiotics, and all I can say is the food is fantastic!
